Dubai made a significant step in smart mobility with the adoption of an AI-based metro inspection system to reduce costs, time, and enhance passenger safety. Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) rolled out the Automated Railway Infrastructure Inspection System (ARIIS), a cutting-edge robot system featuring lasers, sensors, and 3D cameras that can scan and inspect the extensive metro network of the city on its own.
Metro inspections previously were costing thousands of man-hours and half shutdowns of operation. Inspection time has been decreased by as much as 75% with ARIIS, releasing almost 1,700 human work hours a year. In addition to efficiency, the system reduced metro maintenance costs by 25%, while accuracy in inspections improved by almost 40%.
The AI-based system is much more advanced than surface inspection. With the benefit of real-time processing, ARIIS enables predictive maintenance, detecting rail faults like cracks, wear, and other safety hazards much earlier in its lifespan before they develop into large issues. Not just does this improve the conditions of operation smoother, but also increases the life span of major rail infrastructure. It also enables the RTA to better plan manpower deployment, curtail emergency repairs, and improve overall safety of passengers.
Already deployed in selected phases, the system will be introduced throughout the entire metro network following extensive technical tests. The authorities are also considering extending ARIIS to the tram network, and its influence will be stronger on the urban transport infrastructure of Dubai.
The launch of ARIIS marks a milestone on the Dubai smart city vision, with sustainable development, digital transformation, and innovation as cornerstones of its approach. With the adoption of artificial intelligence in transport systems, Dubai is doubling its bets on being a next-generation world leader in mobility solutions.
Dubai isn’t just keeping its metro running with ARIIS—it is future-proofing it, rendering the transportation safer, cheaper, and world-class as convenient as possible in efficiency terms for millions of passengers.
